On January 23rd UW ALA volunteered at the American Lung Association's Fight for Air Stair Climb.
At 6am these dedicated volunteers (pictured below) gathered outside the iconic Burke Museum in the pouring rain, ready to take on a fun morning fighting lung disease and lung cancer. Upon arrival at the location of the event, the Ranier Tower, the group split up and headed to their volunteer obligations- but not before indulging in a delicious breakfast of coffee, donuts and fruit provided by the American Lung Association. Some members participated as greeters for participants of the stair climb as they arrived. Others timed and cheered on participants as they neared the finish line. The Ranier Tower is 140 floors high but it was no problem for some participants who climbed that distance not once or twice but thrice. This event featured everyone from firefighters and marines to the elderly to the very young who consistently served as images of inspiration and support for ALA's cause. Each and every volunteer will vouch that they couldn't imagine a better way to spend a Saturday morning. Nearly $12,000 were raised from the Stair Climb towards research in lung cancer and lung disease not to mention the immense support for those suffering through these illnesses as well as their families. Thank you to all those pictured below - (right to left) Chi Huang, Rachel Arulanantham, Sally Leong, Emili Allen, Ameera Haq, Kyle Curtis (bottom row, left to right) Valerie Paragas and Victoria Henderson for all your help! Thanks for everyone who came to our first meeting! For those of you who couldn't, here are our meeting minutes.
January 23: Stair Climb!
Please come join us for our upcoming event Fight for Stair Climb, which is a fundraising event that aims at raising awareness and improving the situations of the millions of people affected by lung-related diseases. The money that's raised will go into research, education, and programs! We would need enthusiastic volunteers like you to help us achieve our goals! Here's the website link to learn more about Fight for Air Climb: http://action.lung.org/site/PageNavigator/FFA_splash.html Welcome to UW American Lung Association! Are you passionate about improving communities? Are you an eager pre-med student who wants to get involved in the health-related field? Are you an individual who can personally relate to lung diseases? We are a club dedicated to spreading awareness of lung-related diseases and improving communities.
Here’s a preview of what we did last year: 1) Climb for Clean Air at Rainier Tower in January. We volunteered, fundraised, and participated in the 40-story stair climb for ALA, which aimed at fundraising for lung disease research. 2) We participated and volunteered at the Lung Force Expo Walk in May at South Lake Union. This event was geared toward honoring lung cancer victims and survivors, raising awareness for lung health, and fundraising for lung-related research. 3) We collaborated with UW Hall Health to put on Kick Butts Day at the UW campus where we gave out free donuts, raised awareness about lung-related diseases, tobacco prevention and smoking cessation programs, and picked up butts around campus. We look forward to an even more rewarding year. Come and join us! We look forward to meeting you! |
Here's where to find where we'll be at all our upcoming events, what we've been up to, and what we have done.
